KHDPK Policy: The New Era of Forest Management in Java Island

The history of forest management in Java Island has been carried out since the Dutch East Indies Colonial period. In the 19th century, togeth- er with the establishment of the Jawatan Kehutanan (Dienst van het Boschwezen), forest management in Java was carried out with a series of policies considered to be the beginning of forestry science and modern institutions practices in Indonesia. The existence of Jawatan Kehutan- an lasted until the recognition of Indonesian Sovereignty by the Dutch in 1949. Jawatan Kehutanan later became the forerunner of Perum Perhutani as the Production and Protection Forest management entity covering an area of ±2.4 million Ha or nearly 76% of the entire State Forest Area in Java Island.
